After a few moments, it breaks out into the traditional guitars and epic vocals that we’ve come to know from DragonForce. The opening track, "Highway to Oblivion," immediately opens with a synthesizer evocative of a different time: one that reeks of lasers and neon. Metalheads and synthwave listeners can come together in the wake of this new hybrid of music. With something as popular as synthwave making a resurgence, it's both fun and interesting to see this style reimagined and reinvented for a brand new audience. As an homage to this style of music, this comes as a surprise to many longtime DragonForce fans, but it’s quite a joy to listen to. The metal world has been gifted with the reappearance of legendary band DragonForce through the brand new album "Extreme Power Metal." Marketed as a very ‘80s-themed album, DragonForce combines the styles of synth and outrun with the band’s very own tried-and-true heavy metal sound.

While DragonForce’s sound is much more consumable to the average listener compared to something like death metal, Extreme Power Metal still features a number of elements not found in modern pop and rock music. The outrageously complex instrumentals found in that song can also be heard throughout Extreme Power Metal. Being able to successfully complete “ Through the Fire and Flames” on expert difficulty was a milestone for any plastic guitar wielding virtuoso. The first time we heard DragonForce was playing Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Their ability to toe the line between cheesy and serious art when handling fantastical subjects is what sets them apart from their peers.
Dragonforce extreme power metal movie#
Several of the tracks on Extreme Power Metal, like “The Last Dragonborn” and “Troopers of the Stars”, have direct pop culture and movie references. In addition to the classic power metal themes, Extreme Power Metal includes synth, video game, and movie influences. DragonForce’s own spin on power metal mixed with Nintendo sounds and speed metal fury is their claim to fame in the metal community. It typically features symphonic elements with faster, lighter, and more uplifting sounds. Power metal is a blend of traditional heavy metal and speed metal. Each with their own unique style and influences. Just as the title describes, Extreme Power Metal is an over-the-top, bombastic study in power metal.
